AWC have created a passive rainfall alert system to help monitor rainfall events across Australia. This alert system is freely available to anyone wanting to monitor rainfall events to assist with land management and water monitoring.
For example, AWC are monitoring groundwater in response to rainfall at Brunswick Heads, NSW, and we use a 20mm in 24 hours rainfall event as a trigger to undertake water quality sampling. The AWC Rainfall Alert System sends an email and SMS to relevant staff once 20mm of rain has fallen. An automatic notification means we do not have to remember to check BOM updates across our various sites, making monitoring compliance much simpler.
Data for this application is sourced from the Bureau of Meteorology website and categorised according to State; BOM rainfall districts and town (see districts here;). A map showing the location of the applicable weather stations can be found by following the below links.
